Why Did MIJO Hold an Art Show?
MIJO
On June 3, we turned our space at 169 Bowery into POST MORE BILLS, a one-night-only art show with Fridge, MIJO & Friends. We filled the walls with original work and opened the doors. Art, music, food, drinks, and a room full of people coming together around something we made.
The show put our point of view on the walls. At MIJO, we work in layers: art, design, culture, technology. Different disciplines, materials, and approaches build on one another. POST MORE BILLS made that process visible through paint, photography, print, wheatpaste, stencils, and fabrication.
We believe every piece starts with something underneath it. A reference. An experiment. A previous attempt. Someone else’s perspective. As we wrote on the show’s placard, “no canvas truly ever begins blank.” The layers are part of what makes the work worth looking at.
We developed the show with Fridge, whose original artwork brought these ideas into physical form. His range across graffiti, woodcutting, and fabrication gave us room to explore how styles and materials could overlap, interrupt, and transform one another. That exchange is central to how we work at MIJO.
Our street-level approach leans into physicality. Materials you can touch. Work you can walk around. A room you have to show up to. Scale, texture, and the people standing beside you all change how you experience an idea.
It also leans into collaboration. We bring people, disciplines, and perspectives together because the combination takes the work somewhere none of us would get alone. POST MORE BILLS gave that process a physical form, layering art, design, and the energy of the Bowery into one night.
That’s why we held an art show. To put our approach into practice, make something people could experience together, and open it up to the city around us.
The layers make the work. The layers make the people. The layers make us.
